Ducted Fan Two-Wheeled Self-Balancing Robot Prototype
This self-balancing robot with two ducted fans was designed to explore several critical problems I found with the original two-wheeled self-balancing robot, such as long acceleration and deceleration time, inability to retain balance with insufficient ground contact, and poor complex-terrain adaptability.
However, my first attempt was rather unsuccessful. Air propulsion from the ducted fans cannot be modeled simply as force pulses because of fan response delays, complex airflow, and poor weight control in this very first prototype. The next steps are to improve the mechanical design to reduce weight, and to add nozzles and guide grooves to better control airflow. I hope one day this mechanism can achieve agile movement on the ground, or even fly with two additional servo motors controlling the direction of the ducted fans.
